That Air Dried ‘Do . . .
Summer is here, and it’s the perfect time to ditch your hot tools. From messy beach waves to textured braids, here are a few tips and tricks to get you started.
Regularly deep condition.
As the temperatures rise, it’s essential to hydrate your hair. There are so many great conditioners out there–be it a daily product, a weekly mask or a monthly treatment. (Here are my favorite deep conditioners + how I incorporate them into my hair care routine.) I use Phyto’s Lightweight Hydrating Oil on a daily basis. It moisturizes my hair, helping it dry smoothly without extra frizz.
Use a wide tooth comb.
Right after I get out of the shower, I apply products and brush through my ends with a wide tooth comb. This ensures that there are no unruly snarls that might dry into rat-tail like dreads.
Let it completely dry.
If you shower at night, there’s nothing worse than falling asleep on a wet head of hair. More often than not, you’ll wake up the next morning with kinks, crinkles and cowlicks in all the wrong places. This is a game changer. ALWAYS let your hair dry completely before going to bed. Prep the next morning will be so much easier.
Add some texture.
Hoping for beach waves? Once your hair has air dried, you’ll want to add some texture. I recently tried Alterna’s texture spray, and it works like a charm. Simply spritz the solution from roots to ends, and twirl 1-2″ pieces into loose, tousled curls. This product is also a perfect starting point for a messy braid. It gives your hair just enough hold to keep pieces from slipping.
Messy hair is in.
The key to air dried hair is not fussing with it too much. After all, it’s meant to look like you just left the pool. Be confident and own your tousled locks, imperfections and all.
If in doubt, accessorize.
If your a fan of a more finished ‘do, add a hair accessory. Things like jeweled bobby pins or metallic ponytail holders instantly elevate and add polish to your look. I’m also a fan of throwing on a baseball cap. This woven style is light and breathable–perfect for spending time in the summer heat.
