Five tips to get your best cut . . .
Over the years, I’ve tried countless different hairstyles. These tips always ensure I get exactly what I want.
Find inspiration. When I’m looking to make a hairstyle change, the first place I look for inspiration is Pinterest. I like to type key words (like ‘fringe bangs’) into the search bar and pin photos I want to replicate. If you’re not on Pinterest, you can easily search for different styles via Google images or by thumbing through magazines.
Narrow down a style. Of the pictures you’ve collected, narrow down your favorites to 1-3 styles. I either save these on my phone or print them out. Make sure that you can explain exactly why you like the styles you picked. Each and every detail is helpful when it comes to talking through the new cut with your stylist.
Brainstorm with your stylist. This is THE most important part of the process because it defines the direction of your appointment. At this point, I show my stylist the inspiration photos I collected and use descriptive words like long layers, face framing bangs or textured ends. You should also be prepared to listen to your stylist’s feedback. If a cut you picked isn’t flattering for your face shape, ditch it. Your stylist knows best–they’re trained and do this for a living.
Be completely honest. If there’s something specific that you like or dislike, make sure your stylist knows. I’ve learned this the hard way by going home, hating something about the cut and then stewing over it for the next week. Honestly, it isn’t worth the stress. Man up, and tell your stylist if you don’t like it. This opens the door to try something different and to make necessary changes. Happy clients leave good tips. Your stylist definitely wants you to be happy.
Get styling advice. After you get your cut, ask a few questions about styling your new ‘do. I like to learn what tools are best to use or what products are necessary to make my hair look like the inspiration photo. It’s also a good idea to take a few detailed notes while your stylist blow dries and styles your hair. It’s like a mini tutorial session, watching someone else do it before you have to recreate it on your own.
