Photoshoots while traveling . . .
Planning a vacation? There’s no better time to schedule a shoot, especially if you’re visiting a new-to-you location. After all, destination and travel photos tend to be the dreamiest.
While I was in Palm Springs, I made plans with a local photographer (hi, Erica!) to squeeze in a quick round of photos at The Saguaro. It was such a great way to document the trip and collect professional quality content for future blog posts.
Here are a few things I learned along the way:
Finding a Photographer
Instagram is the perfect place to find a photographer that fits your style. Before heading to Palm Springs, I searched hashtags like #palmspringsphotographer, #palmspringswedding and #palmspringsphotoshoot. These tags can be applied to any location. Let’s get to Insta stalking.
Communicate Expectations
This is the most important part of the process so invest quality time corresponding with the photographer you’ve found. Email tends to be the easiest option. Be sure to discuss what you hope to use the photos for, possible backgrounds, preferred photo editing techniques, turnaround time and packages/pricing. The more you communicate, the better.
Sign a Contract
If you both happen to be on the same page, put it all in writing. A contract communicates professionalism, sets the tone for your future in-person interaction and clearly defines what you’ll get + give.
Email Pictures of Your Outfits
Since you’re planning the shoot via long distance, it’s helpful to email photos of the outfits you want to wear. This also helps to solidify location and theme of the shoot. I like to include flat lay style snaps as well as a few mirror selfies that show how the outfit looks on, styled with accessories and shoes.
How do you feel about photoshoots while traveling?
P.S. If you’re headed to Palm Springs, be sure to look up Erica Mendenhall Photography. She was so much fun to work with.

Wonderful tips! Next trip I’m def hiring a photographer because I tried doing my own pics on a trip to Puerto Rico in July and it was so difficult to find the time ….the trip was hectic and I ended up with nothing 🙁

I feel your pain, Erica! I’ve been on so many trips where I come home with photos, and I’m not in any of them. Never again!

These are some great ideas! I always have such trouble shooting looks while on vacation. I always try and squeeze so much in that there’s no extra time for picture taking!

Thanks, Victoria! Next big trip, I’m planning to have a local photographer tag along for one of our ‘planned’ activities. That way, it kills two birds with one stone: document the memories + get in some sight seeing.
