Our front door . . .
We’ve heard it all before: first impressions are everything. This rings particularly true when it comes to a home’s front door. The entry should feel warm and inviting, but it also should make a statement. After all, this is the first ‘feature’ both you + your guests encounter each time you approach and enter your home. This is why I’m really excited about working with Simpson Door Company. Their collection combines high quality materials with beautiful designs.
New around here? You can catch up on our home renovation by watching our first video update or by reading our first home Q&A. I’ve also shared a few more informational posts about vendors we’re working with and products we’re using (read them here). This is a big project for our growing family, and it’s been over a year in the making. Now that the dirty work is nearly complete, it’s time to dig into the design elements. Let’s start with our new front door.

SELECTING A STYLE via SIMPSON DOOR CO.
I can’t say enough good things about the Simpson Door Company website. Guys, it’s very user-friendly. I love browsing their door gallery for project ideas. It’s like a front door style Pinterest board packed with REAL customer photos. Take a peek for yourself. It’s the best kind of inspiration.
You can also utilize Simpson’s DOORMAGINATION design tools to do things like Test Drive a Door. This feature lets you see what any of their doors look like on your house before pulling the trigger. I’ve shared a few screen shots of our selection process below–I uploaded a photo of our existing door and can’t believe the transformation.
Test Drive a Door – digitally swap your existing door for a Simpson style by uploading a pic
Glass Taste Test – visualize the type of glass you prefer in terms of design + privacy level
Wood Selector – pick out your wood type with just a few simple clicks
READY FOR INSTALL
Our Simpson door has officially arrived, and it’s ready for install. Isn’t she a beauty? We decided to go with a contemporary design for both the front door and the coordinating sidelight. It’s a slight departure from the original front door package (pictured above). The updated style feels more modern, but the cross reed glass still pays tribute to the home’s mid-century roots. I also like the variation in the mahogany wood. We plan to finish the door with a matte clear coat to let it’s natural grain show through. I can’t imagine a more beautiful way to welcome guests into our newly renovated space.

The new door looks really good with the house! I love how you were able to really customize what you wanted and try it out on their website to see if it would look good. I’m always so nervous about paint and I could see being that way towards front doors, too!
