DIY orange slice garland . . .
I’ve wanted to make this DIY orange slice garland for years, but I’ve never gotten around to it because I thought the project would be too big. Guys, it’s so easy. It’s so simple. It’s so beautiful. Truth be told, the hardest part is waiting for the orange slices to bake. Mary Jane can attest to this–it’s realllllly hard to wait when you’re a toddler. But let’s dive right in, step-by-step. You better go buy some citrus.
What You’ll Need
Oranges
Twine (this is what I used)
Sissors
Jelly Roll Pan (like these)
Parchment Paper
Cutting Board
Citrus Essential Oil (to boost the aroma)
Serrated Knife
Set your oven to 200 degrees, and line the jelly roll pan with parchment paper. This will keep your orange slices from sticking. (Citrus juice can get sticky when baking.)
Cut your orange slices, making sure each slice is about the 1/4-1/2″ in thickness. You don’t want them to be too thick because the finished garland might feel too heavy.
Arrange the orange slices on the parchment lined pan, making sure none overlap. Each slice should be sitting flat.
Bake the orange slices for 4 hours at 200 degrees. The slices should begin to brown around the edges, and the inside should look like dried out.
Rub a small amount of citrus essential oil on each dried orange slice. This helps the garland to be more potent.
Depending on where you’d like to hang your garland, measure out the appropriate amount of twine. I add a bit extra in my measurement to allow for tying knots as I add each slice.
String the twine through each orange slice. I put my string through the center of the slices (there was a natural hole there) and tied a knot at the top of each. I then moved on to the next orange slice and did the same thing.
You can space your orange slices however you prefer–tightly together with one after the other or with a bit of distance from one slice to the next. Either way, I’m a firm believer that it each strand of garland comes out looking quite charming and unique.
Psst! This DIY orange slice garland makes a wonderful gift. Put a strand in a cellophane bag and tie it with more twine. It looks homemade and feels extra thoughtful.
