Thermory wood . . .
If you’re new around here, let me introduce you to @ourmidmodreno. Long story short: we bought a fixer upper in 2017, we completely gutted + renovated said house, and we’re finally living in a Mid-Century modern dream. (You can peep the renovation archives here.) Yes, there are still plenty of projects left to tackle. Yard, I’m looking at you! We’re slowly and surely checking things off the punch list. The biggest project to reach completion was our backyard fence. It’s beautiful AND completely toddler-proof. We knew Thermory wood would stand up to the challenge, but the final product has exceeded all expectations.
What is it?
Thermory wood is thermally modified through heat and steam. This makes the product rot resistant, incredibly durable and moisture + extreme temperature friendly. You can install it indoors or out–decking, cladding, flooring. How you use Thermory is really only limited by your creativity. I always enjoy scrolling through their project gallery.
Why did we choose Thermory?
We loved the idea of minimal maintenance, and Thermory’s promise of the ‘perfect outdoor experience’ sealed the deal. Here are a few of the pros: It’s real wood, and it looks naturally beautiful as-is without additional stains, paints or oils. It simply ages over time, no maintenance required.
Each piece of wood is also expertly milled and arrives smooth to touch. This means NO SANDING on sight. If you’ve ever done a home renovation, I’m sure you share my disgust of sawdust. It gets everywhere and is impossible to clean.
Another pro is that Thermory wood isn’t hot on your feet after hours of sun. This was a huge determining factor. I want our yard to be completely kid-friendly, our deck during the dead of summer included.
Last but certainly not least, installation is a breeze. I especially love that there are no nail holes. Everything is seamlessly constructed, creating clean and modern lines. In the end, the ease in instillation can actually save time AND money.
Where did we use it?
Our deck and fence are both made with Thermory, and we also wrapped our existing 1950s patio with the same thermally processed wood. It was important that we had a cohesive look throughout the backyard.
Would we use Thermory again?
YES. Double yes. While this product is a bit pricier, it ticks all the boxes. It functional + straightforward to install, it stands up to the elements (freezing temps/snow in the winter and dry heat in the summer) and it looks incredible. Plus, maintenance is nearly nonexistent. It’ll age beautifully over the next 15+ years.
Stay tuned for ‘AFTER’ photos in the next couple of weeks.
