Playa del Carmel Hotel . . .
There are few things I like more than the smell of salt in the air and the sound of waves crashing on a beach. It relaxes me, instantly sending a wave of dopamine to my brain. The beach has always been one of my happy places. Cue a short flight to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. This beautiful coastal city is known for it’s picturesque palm lined beaches and access to the world’s largest coral reef system in the Riviera Maya. It’s the perfect spot for a vacation.
Where to stay
The Fives Downtown checked off all of our Playa del Carmen hotel requirements. I’m talking modern, updated accommodations, a living wall full of lush greenery and an infinity pool with views for days. We spent most of our free time camped out under a rooftop umbrella, swimming and drinking Coca Lite to our heart’s content. The hotel staff was more than accommodating, and we really enjoyed their dedication to making our stay as memorable as possible.
What to Do
Plan to spend your mornings at the hotel relaxing by the pool. The earlier you get there the better–lounge chairs with an unobstructed ocean view are limited. There is also a full service bar and service menu. For lunch, I highly recommend ordering the club sandwich. It was incredible.
Take a day trip to Cozumel. Be sure to bookmark this Instagram post with all the details. We took a morning ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. From there, we rented a scooter from HTL Rentals. They are highly rated online and have great customer service. You can scooter around the island, stopping at beaches and eateries along the way.

Do dinner like the locals. I can’t say enough good things about the food at El Fogon (20ish minute walk from The Fives). These raving Yelp reviewers don’t lie. The atmosphere is lively, the chorizo tacos are heaven sent and you better believe I ate my weight in sirloin fonduta. We snagged a table on the second floor balcony. IMHO it’s the best place to enjoy the experience.
Looking for adventure? Book a Jungle Buggy Tour, and prepare to get dirty! We did the buggy tour with the centoe swim. Our rockstar guides were Chris and Rocio. They went above and beyond to make our tour extra fun.
